Seedlings of cabbage in Siberia: technology and timing of planting and cultivation


A large number of types of cabbage are cultivated by domestic gardeners, but in the conditions of home gardening in Siberia, the cultivation of white, cauliflower and Beijing cabbage is most popular. The soil and climatic conditions of the region are unsuitable for direct sowing of crops on ridges of open ground, so it is important not only to choose the best and most stable varieties, but also to properly prepare cabbage seeds, grow high-quality seedlings and provide the plant with full care.

When and how to sow seeds

The time at which cabbage seeds should be sown can vary depending on the length of the growing period of seedlings and the timing of planting in a permanent place. Estimated time for sowing seeds of almost any type of cabbage for growing in Siberia:

  • cabbage of early ripe and ultra-early varieties and hybrids - the first decade of March;
  • cabbage of varieties and hybrid forms of medium maturity - the second half of April;
  • late ripening varieties and hybrids of cabbage - the last decade of March or the beginning of April.

The seeding rate in the absence of picking seedlings is:

  • early ripening varieties and hybrids - about 1.5-2.0 g per square meter, with a standard feeding area of ​​6x6 cm or 7x7 cm and a growing time of seedlings of 45-60 days;
  • mid-ripening varieties and hybrids - about 3.0-5.0 g per square meter, with a standard feeding area of ​​5x5 cm or 6x6 cm and a growing time of seedlings of 35-45 days;
  • late-ripening varieties and hybrids - about 4.0-5.0 g per square meter, with a standard feeding area of ​​5x5 cm or 6x6 cm and a growing time of seedlings of 40-45 days.

Seeds of pre-prepared seeds should be planted with a depth of one centimeter. In order to maintain optimal moisture indicators, it is recommended to cover the crops with a film. Subject to the temperature regime, mass shoots appear on about five days later, after which the shelter can be removed.

Cabbage in Siberia: planting dates

You need to grow cabbage according to the technology of cultivating a garden plant and in compliance with several rules, including proper soil preparation:

  • soil for growing seedlings should be fertile and contain all the main nutrients that contribute to the normal growth and full development of the vegetable crop;
  • the amount of components included in the soil should be balanced and include organic matter, as well as macro- and microelements in a form assimilable to the culture;
  • the soil structure should be most suitable for growing seedlings, light and as loose as possible, which will provide the root system of the plant with sufficient air;
  • the soil nutrient mixture must have sufficient moisture capacity indicators for growing seedlings.

To prepare the optimal composition of the planting mixture, one part of the turfy soil, one part of humus and one part of peat should be mixed. Soil can be used on the basis of twenty parts of turf land, five parts of wood ash, part of lime and part of coarse sand. The soil mixture based on ten parts of peat, four parts of turfy land and part of sand has proven itself well.

Approximately 18–20 g of ammonium nitrate or urea, 22–25 g of superphosphate, 10–12 g of potassium sulfate, and 23–25 g of dolomite flour should be added to the resulting soil mixture. With independent production of soil, its disinfection at home is carried out by freezing, calcining, steaming and pickling.

Seedling Disease Prevention

When using seeds purchased from hands or self-grown seeds, seed material must be decontaminated in hot water or a solution of antifungal drugs. After sprouts of cabbage appear, it is recommended to lower the temperature regime to 6-10 ° С., which protects plants from stretching and lodging in the first week of growth and development. After the appearance of the first true leaflet, the temperature needs to be increased to 14-18 ° C in sunny weather, about 12-16 ° C in cloudy weather, and 6-10 ° C at night.

In the process of growing cabbage seedlings must be ventilated, providing seedlings with an air flow. Weekly seedlings must be watered with water at room temperature. A good result is given by watering the cabbage seedlings with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, diluted at the rate of one and a half grams in five liters of warm water. To prevent damage to cabbage plantings by diseases and pests, when planting seedlings at a permanent place, all plants suspicious of being affected by pathogenic microflora are rejected.
