Creation and design of a natural reservoir in the country

Water in nature always seemed to magically attract a person to itself. And today, a garden with a pond is super-fashionable, since water in any form is just the perfect element for decorating gardens of different styles. With the help of modern technology, you can easily maintain a toned artificial reservoir or pool, as well as an ennobled pond that was originally on your land.

A variety of styles, shapes and sizes offers landscape design of the water part of the garden.

If you love nature in its original form, then it is worth laying a natural pond. Its smallest area is six square meters, and the depth is from a meter and a half, all this in order to be able to populate the pond not only with plants, but also with fish. It is also worth remembering that the larger the pond, the faster it establishes a favorable microclimate. If you launched fish into the pond, you need to make sure that in winter it does not freeze to the bottom.

What to do if your site already has a reservoir, but it is boggy and generally looks unattractive? Everything can be corrected.

How to tidy up a natural pond on a plot

It is best to completely pump water out of the pond into the nearest ditch., clean its bottom, remove wild weeds such as cattail big and sedge swamp. (It should be noted that bottom sludge is an excellent fertilizer for the garden and vegetable garden. It can be used by laying under trees and shrubs or adding flower beds to the ground.) Next, the bottom of the pond should be deepened to the depth you need, but without making its walls sheer.

If you plan to swim in a pond, then you need to equip a stepped descent. It is best made from concrete blocks that do not malt in the water for a long time. When the descent is ready, if your pond is not in the middle of the lawn, you need to take care of surrounding it with plants for which niches are created in the gentle shores. If the soil is heavily floating away - sand or sandy loam - you can cover the bottom, and most importantly, the pond walls with a supporting plastic frame made of a special plastic mesh. Then you do not have to worry about quickly chopping the pond due to the sweeping of the shores.

Today we are talking about the arrangement of natural reservoirs and ponds. They are located in the lowest part of the site and, in addition to their direct purpose, can also serve as a catchment basin for thawed and high-level groundwater. To do this, drains are laid in the direction of the pond, shallow grooves filled with sand or fine gravel and covered with earth above. It is necessary to ensure that household water from septic tanks does not fall into the pond!

With high floods, the pond may be crowded, which also cannot be allowed. Therefore, in its lowest part, an outlet plastic pipe is laid leading to the drainage ditch.

How to make a pond with your own hands

Combined with a pond: comfortable and beautiful

You can realize the original idea of combining a natural pond with a swimming pool. The fact is that not everyone likes to swim surrounded by fish and aquatic plants, and connecting a pond and a bath is an excellent solution to the problem.

For this, two concrete walls 20 cm thick are laid along the pond, which divide the pond into four parts. In the middle, a swimming path free of plants forms, and water lilies and egg cubs will bloom on the sides with lush colors, behind them the banks can be decorated with a dwarf cattail and a swimsuit. Looking at this wonderful structure from the side, you will never guess that in the very center there is a gorgeous bathhouse. In the zone of lifting from the water, wide wooden walkways are installed, where the whole family can sunbathe or garden furniture can be installed. Concrete walls are buried 40 centimeters below the water level.

For better waterproofing use a thick filmwhich covers the entire bottom of the pond, dividing walls and the path between them. A 10-centimeter layer of sand is laid at the bottom of the pond where the plants are located, then covered with burlap and pond soil is added from above mixed with garden soil. Part of the fast-growing plants are planted in special containers, and part just in the ground. The bottom of the swimming path over the film is covered with sand, and on top with special rolled pebbles.

Plants by the pond: which ones to choose

The vegetation of any pond is of great importance, both from an aesthetic and from a practical point of view.

It is not recommended to plant tall trees in the immediate vicinity of the pond: their roots, falling into the water, will lead to a tree disease and a smaller pond, and fallen leaves in the autumn, if not carefully collected, will rot and pollute the water. But trees with variegated foliage, such as dogwood or Japanese maple planted in the background, can become a bright accent of the entire exposition.

Given the spring water spill and its autumn decline, the coastal region is usually divided into several zones.

We plant plants depending on the coastal zone

The first zone is deep sea. It is named so conditionally, since it starts with a 50-centimeter depth and shallower. This is a zone of floating leaves and flowers, and the queen here is rightfully considered a water lily, or water lily. These plants thrive in deep water, planting material is sold in special cloth containers. When buying a particular variety, ask what depth is preferred for it, as some species, planted too small, grow very much, but almost do not bloom. Especially take an interest in the producing country - this affects the winter hardiness of plants. It’s even easier to plant a deep-sea zone with the familiar egg-pot. She certainly is not as beautiful as a water lily, but it is completely unpretentious. There is another wonderful plant of our latitudes - duckweed, its bright green leaves can decorate the surface of the water in the summer heat.

A shallow zone is usually a swamp zone, therefore, almost all plants are planted in containers here. Many wild species today with the help of breeders have acquired an interesting variegated or striped foliage. In shallow water, decorative-deciduous and decorative-flowering plants can be successfully combined. First of all, this is the well-known iris or marsh iris, which even feels great even with a spring rise in water up to 30-40 centimeters. Another interesting plant for a shallow water area is considered a hedgehog, in which both flowers and fruits look very exotic. What can we say about the water pine or the common tail, literally four containers with this plant, planted in your pond, seem like a shoot of dwarf pines.

How to clean a pond

One of the plants suitable for the boundary of shallow and boggy zones is the moth. Its flower cobs are wrapped in a snow-white stipule and are somewhat reminiscent of callas. Wingfly is hard to miss at any time of the year, in summer its leathery, heart-shaped leaves shine in the sun, and in the fall, flowers turn into bright raspberry fruit. In our country Wingfly included in the book of endangered plants, and this is another reason to keep it in your garden. Remember that the fruit of this plant is poisonous! For wetlands, an unpretentious plant of mint, blooming with fragrant pale pink inflorescences, is perfect. This fragrant and medicinal plant can be brewed in soothing teas. For a swampy area, both marsh marigold with yellow flowers and smooth iris with blue flowers are perfect. From more delicate and graceful flowers you can plant cotton grass - hare legs, marsh forget-me-not with both blue and pink flowers, and others.

Thus, it is possible to literally create a beautiful frame around your pond with flowers. Do not forget only that the water depth in the swamp zone should not exceed 10 centimeters, and that all of the above plants should be planted in containers that inhibit their lush growth.

If you have a site with high groundwater standing and constantly moist soil, then most likely you tried to cut off the banks of the pond with a waterproofing film to prevent garden soil from absorbing water from the pond. Thus, protecting the rest of the site, you have created constantly wet lawns around the pond. The roots of plants planted here will be constantly in moist soil, so their choice should be taken seriously. The first plant that asks for this zone is a swimsuit. Its decorative views with large double flowers of yellow or orange please the eye. Next to it, the Siberian iris looks great, the flowers of which have a variety of colors from white to blue or red. The combination of orange with deep blue always gives energy.

In the same damp zone, cascade primrose and fine-toothed primrose take root well, they will delight you with their flowering from early spring. The snakehead may not be as spectacular, but it blooms from early summer until October and also feels great in moist soil. Tall plants, such as meadowsweet or astilbe, are best planted in the background so that they do not cover lower plants and, most importantly, a mirror of water.

What plants to plant on the shore

The shore of the reservoir, located behind the cut-off film, is rather not a decoration of the pond itself, but a zone of its smooth transition into the garden. Only successfully combining the pond with the rest of the garden will you get an organic picture.

Dwarf solitary trees or interesting shrubs look best in this case. Trees with a columnar or round crown on the banks of the pond will look alien. Here plants with a weeping crown or formed on a stem are more suitable. It is even easier to fit the pond into the garden surrounding it - this is to install a gazebo or a canopy nearby or wide wooden walkways, from which the path would lead directly to the house. Framing the path with the same plants that grow on the shore of the pond, even more tightly connect all the elements into a single whole. If the arbor standing next to it is decorated with curly roses, then along the path or around the walkways it is worth planting several bushes of park roses.

Plants for the pond

To ennoble the natural pond you got is a matter of creativity and excitement. But if your site does not have a pond, then it can be created. We’ll talk about this next time.
